Tips for Electrical Safety Month

Every home has an extensive and convenient electrical system. Although electricity carries some risks, with huge advances in building codes and technology, electricity is safer than ever before. However, electricity can still be responsible for fires and accidental electrocutions, so households should practice good electrical safety and habits. This month is a great opportunity to learn about some tips to keep homes and families safe from electrical dangers. Here are some tips for electrical safety and to prevent electrical hazards.

Stop Overloading Outlets and Circuits

One potential cause of residential fires is overloaded outlets and circuits. While the latest outlets and circuit breakers can help avoid the risk of fires, the best defense is to have good habits about circuit and outlet use. As electricity flows through the home, it produces heat. Wiring that carries more power due to overloaded outlets and circuits will heat up much more than wires that only service low-use devices. Once the wires heat up, they can cause wear and tear and damage that can melt wiring and cause a fire.

Households should avoid overloaded circuits and outlets and help prevent this danger by splitting electrical loads between outlets and circuits. To do this:

  • Install new circuits for high-demand appliances and devices
  • Add new outlets, if necessary, in high-use rooms
  • Divide up the electrical load between multiple circuits
  • Never use extension cords to plug in appliances, and limit one appliance per outlet
  • Replace damaged circuit breakers and outlets

Install Childproof Outlets

Installing tamper-resistant or childproof outlets is beneficial, regardless of whether children are living in the home full-time or not. Childproof outlets have spring-loaded tabs that prevent foreign objects from entering outlets. However, when pressure is applied to the tabs evenly, as in the case of a plug being inserted, the tabs retract, allowing for easy access.

Tamper-resistant outlets offer enhanced electrical safety by adding an extra layer of protection against electrical accidents and injuries, such as electrocutions and electrical shock, especially for toddlers and children who are naturally curious and may explore outlets by inserting objects.

Know When to Call Professionals

Another way homeowners can help keep their homes and families safe is by being aware of the signs of electrical problems and knowing when to call electricians. Calling for service quickly when a problem is noticed can help prevent potential damage and electrical hazards. Call an electrician if these signs of an electrical problem are noticed:

  • Frequently tripped circuit breakers
  • Outlets or switches that are warm or hot to the touch
  • Small electrical shock when plugging something in
  • Flickering or dim lights
  • Buzzing noises
  • Burning smells
  • Visible damage to outlets, wiring, and more or inconsistent power
