Keep These Things In Mind (And Out of the Drain!)

Some things should NEVER go down your drains! Even if you have a garbage disposal or items are labeled as “flushable,” they can lead to clogs. Our team has put together a quick list of things to avoid disposing of down the drains to preserve your drains’ health. Continue reading to find out what they are!

coffee grounds around a drain

Coffee Grounds

It can be easy to rinse out your reusable coffee filter or espresso portafilter of sticky coffee grounds in your kitchen sink. However, coffee grounds are not completely water-soluble, and when mixed with butter or grease, an increased risk for clogs occurs.

Cooking Oil

We have all been told not to rinse cooking oil or grease down the sink, but when it comes down to it, it’s convenient. Cooking oil is a major contributor to kitchen sink clogs when it mixes with food to create a thick sludge. Using a leftover plastic container, you can collect your cooking oil and grease and dispose of it properly in your trashcan.

pasta in a drain

Pasta

Pasta expands when it absorbs water, so it should be a no-brainer NOT to put it down your drains. However, many of us think that our garbage disposals save the day. Pasta can create a thick paste and stick to the disposal trap or get stuck on your disposal’s blades.

“Flushable” Wipes

The only thing that is truly flushable is toilet paper. Even wipes that are advertised as “flushable” are not and will eventually lead to a clog. The easiest way to encourage guests in your home to dispose of personal hygiene items properly is to put a wastebasket in the bathroom.

Pills in a sink drain

Medications

While there is no inherent danger to your drains from putting medication down your drains, there is an environmental risk. It’s best to dispose of old or unwanted medication in a sealed container in your garbage.
